George Nkencho's family to meet with GSOC to establish why he was shot by gardai

George Nkencho's family is to meet with the An Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission today to establish why he was shot dead by an officer.

The 27-year-old was killed when he was shot outside his home in Clonee by gardai and died despite efforts to save him after he was rushed to Connolly Hospital.

Family solicitor Phelim O'Neill told RTE's Barry Lenihan said the family want answers about his death.

He also said that the family wanted to challenge a number of claims made about Nkencho online, including statements that he had a criminal record.

Community leader in West Dublin, JK Omwumereh, said that the protests are taking place to achieve the objective of getting justice but that they must remain peaceful.

He said: "Violence is not absolutely not allowed, calm is necessary.

"People are very, very angry, and what we try to do as a community leader is to make sure that this anger is put toward positive things and that is why we are protesting.

"We are talking about a human life, the community decided to do a 14-day protest which is traditional, it started on Thursday of last week and will end up with a candle lit procession outside Blanchardstown Garda station.

"We hope that at the end of the day that we will achieve the objective of getting justice for George Nkencho."

Armed gardai attended the scene and shots were fired following reports of public order incidents in the Hartstown shopping centre - a shop worker was hospitalised with facial injuries believed to be a broken nose.

Local TD Jack Chambers appealed for calm, saying that there had been a number of public order incidences that frightened members of the community.

He said: "Some of the behaviour is unacceptable and I'd ask people to stop. It doesn't help when the general community has reacted with fear in response to it.

"In the context of Covid 19 and the fact that the pandemic is in a really worrying place at the moment to have mass crowds and congregations isn't correct either in the context of level 5 either so people need to take a step back and I'd urge people to remain calm".
