George HW Bush's service dog Sully heads to a new posting

Sully, George HW Bush’s service dog who was seen laying underneath the former president’s coffin, will move to a centre for wounded warriors next year.

The yellow Labrador was George HW Bush’s service dog, opening doors and picking up items for the president who had Parkinson’s disease.

Following his death, a heartbreaking image showed the animal laying next to Mr Bush’s coffin ahead of his funeral.

Sully will now head to Walter Reed National Military Centre visiting veterans and helping comfort them during rehabilitation sessions.

According to John Miller, CEO of America’s VetDogs, Mr Bush’s wish was that “Sully serve other veterans.”

Sully will return to service in February after spending the holiday season with his trainer Valerie Cramer.

Ms Cramer told People.com: “We’re polishing up on some of his training. I am just giving him time to settle in and relax.”

He will also learn new tasks before the big move.

The service dog is named after former airline pilot Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger III, who became famous for landing a damaged passenger jet on the Hudson River in 2009.

Former president George W Bush wrote on Instagram: “As much as our family is going to miss this dog, we're comforted to know he'll bring the same joy to his new home, Walter Reed, that be brought to 41.”

America’s VetDogs is a New York-based nonprofit group which provides service dogs to veterans.
