George Honeyman injury latest as Hull star 'desperate' to face Sunderland

George Honeyman is 'desperate' to be involved for Hull City when they take on Sunderland in Tuesday night's League One promotion clash.

The former Black Cats midfielder sat out the Tigers' 2-1 win over Fleetwood on Saturday after picking up a slight knock in traning.

However, manager Grant McCann expects Honeyman to be back in contention for the midweek showdown against his former club, and says he is keen to be involved.

"He just got a knock on Friday in training,” McCann told our sister title Hull Live. “We weren’t going to take any risks with him, we didn’t want to rule him out of the remaining games.

“He’s on the mend and I’m sure he’ll be fine for Tuesday. The type of person George is, he’s not one to want to miss games let me tell you

“He’s doing everything he can to make sure we get him on the pitch on Tuesday or he’s involved on Tuesday.”

Hull had to come from behind to beat Fleetwood on Saturday as they opened up an 11-point gap on third-placed Sunderland, with the Black Cats losing 1-0 at Blackpool.

But while Hull were a little off the pace, McCann says Honeyman's absence was not the reason - and he promised not to take any risks with the Sunderland academy graduate.

“If it’s not Tuesday, I’d imagine he’ll be back for next Saturday but we’ll see how he is over the next 24 hours or so," he added.

“He’s desperate to be involved, like everybody is. George is no different to the rest but we’ll give him as much time as he needs.”
