George Floyd vigil held at Free Derry Corner

Dozens of people held a vigil at the Free Derry Corner on Friday evening in memory of George Floyd.

Protests over the death of Mr Floyd have flared throughout the US after video surfaced in the wake of his death in Minneapolis, showing a police officer holding his knee to the man's neck for more than eight minutes.

Protesters gathered at the iconic site in the heart of the Bogside area of the city, many carrying signs, candles and flags.

SDLP councillor, Mary Durkan, who attended the vigil told Belfast Live: "It was great to see the people of Derry come out during this time and show solidarity with Minneaplois.

"Derry of all places is known for this type of action, it was short, simple and above all else powerful."

A one minute silence was held in memory of Mr Floyd as the diverse crowd joined together at 7pm on May 29.
