George Floyd verdict: Cop Derek Chauvin guilty of murder

The police officer who kneeled on George Floyd's neck in the arrest which sparked protests over racism and policing across the world has been found guilty of murder.

The jury in the trial of Derek Chauvin returned the unanimous verdict on Tuesday (April 20) after 10 hours of deliberation.

The death of the 46-year-old in a Minneapolis street on May 25, 2020, sparked outrage around the world and an international movement calling for change.

Chauvin, 45, denied second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter during the 15-day trial under Judge Pete Cahill.

The jury found him guilty on all counts unanimously.

Shocking footage which was shared across the globe showed Mr Floyd moaning and gasping while he pleaded to the officer kneeling on his neck, saying: "Please, I can't breathe."

After more than nine minutes, Mr Floyd gradually went quiet and stopped moving.

The jury had been told to reach a unanimous verdict on each charge to convict or acquit the ex-officer.

The jury reached its verdict after considering three weeks of testimony from 45 witnesses, including bystanders and medical experts, along with hours of video evidence in the most high-profile US police misconduct case in decades.
