George Floyd: Tallaght artist Emmalene Blake's latest mural pays touching tribute to man whose death has sparked riots across America

A Tallaght artist who has brightened up her estate by painting a series of murals during lockdown has paid a touching tribute to George Floyd.

Emmalene Blake's artwork of famous faces such as Cardi B, Dua Lipa and The Police have been well received in Kingswood, with residents even raising funds to buy paint so she can continue her work.

While most of the works to date have carried messages about social distancing while tinged with a bit of fun, Emmalene turned her attention to more serious matters with her latest painting.

Sharing the finished work with a powerful message on social media, she said: "Teach kids about racism and privilege.

"Teach them to recognise their privilege - white, class, straight, cis, male privilege and teach them to be allies.

"Teach them to always stand up to racism and discrimination. Teach them to do better than the generations that came before them."

Mr Floyd, an African-American man, died after he stopped breathing while police officer Derek Chauvin was filmed kneeling on his neck for several minutes.

Mr Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder and is due in court for the first time later today.

Three other officers who were filmed at the scene have been fired but are not currently facing any charges in relation to the incident.

The 46-year-old's death has sparked violent scenes across the US and worldwide protests.

A number of major US cities have been put under strict curfews following six days of rioting as anti-racism protesters took to the streets to vent their fury at Mr Floyd's death.

There were violent clashes in a small park near the White House, with President Donald Trump reportedly being rushed to an underground bunker in the presidential residence by Secret Service agents.

Night-time curfews have been but in place in cities such as Washington, Los Angeles and Houston while there have been other large-scale protests in cities such as New York and Miami.

There were reports of looting in the LA suburb of Santa Monica, prompting officials to impose a curfew from 4pm local time yesterday until dawn this morning.

In Dublin, around 100 people protested yesterday outside the US embassy in Ballsbridge yesterday afternoon.

Some carried banners that read “Black Lives Matter” and “I can’t breathe”, words spoken by George Floyd in his final hours.

A further protest took place outside the US ambassador's residence in Deerfield, Phoenix Park.

Another demonstration will take place at the Spire on O'Connell Street at 3pm today.
