George Floyd's body arrives in Houston, will be laid to rest Tuesday next to his mother

George Floyd has come home.

The 46-year-old black man whose death under the knee of a Minneapolis police officer during an arrest galvanized a nation to take to the streets in protest arrived back in Houston, where he grew up, early Sunday.

"George Floyd and his family are safely in Houston," tweeted Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo.

There will be a public viewing on Monday, with thousands expected to attend.

Floyd will be laid to rest on Tuesday, next to his mother, Larcenia Floyd, the Associated Press reported.

A memorial service was held in Minneapolis last week, followed by one in North Carolina, where he was born.

Floyd grew up in Houston's Third Ward and helped bring his Yates High School football team to the Texas state championships, according to the Houston Chronicle. He also rapped with local legend DJ Screw, said AP.

Seeking a fresh start, he moved to Minneapolis in 2017, the Houston Chronicle noted. He was killed on May 25.

Former police office Derek Chauvin who kneeled on Floyd's neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, even after he had stopped moving, has been charged with second-degree murder. The three officers who stood by are charged with aiding and abetting.

Social distancing requirements due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic mean that only 15 mourners will be allowed inside the church at a time, KPRC-TV reported, and all attendees must wear gloves and masks to enter. Large bags will now be allowed inside.

Tuesday's funeral will be private.
