George Floyd police officer charged with murder as mass protests rock Minneapolis

Shamed cop Derek Chauvin has been charged with murder after he was seen kneeling on the neck of tragic George Floyd.

The ex-police officer was one of four officers who were sacked after video footage of the horrifying incident in Minneapolis came to light.

George Floyd, 46, died on Monday after the cop was seen pinning his neck to the ground with his knee despite the unarmed victim repeatedly saying he could not breathe.

His death has sparked global outrage with mass protests, arson, looting and vandalism rocking the American city.

Chauvin has now been charged with third-degree murder, Hennepin County attorney Mike Freeman has said.

"He is in custody and has been charged with murder. We have evidence, we have the citizen's video, the horrible, horrific, terrible thing we've seen over and over again."

The horrific mobile phone footage showed Floyd repeatedly moaning and gasping while he pleaded to Chauvin, kneeling on his neck, "Please, I can't breathe."

After several minutes, Floyd gradually grows quiet and stops moving.
