George Floyd: Black Lives Matter demonstration proposed for Edinburgh's Princes Street Gardens

A Black Lives Matter protest has been proposed to take place in Edinburgh this weekend, "in solidarity with American protesters" following the death George Floyd.

Footage showing former police officer Derek Chauvin pinning an unarmed George Floyd to the ground by his neck during his arrest in Minneapolis last Monday sparked outrage across the world.

The 46-year-old became unresponsive around six minutes into the ordeal and later died in police custody after being rushed to hospital. Mr Chauvin, who was fired earlier this week, has now been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.

Three other officers who were involved in Mr Floyd's arrest have not yet been charged.

Protesters have since taken to the streets in cities across the US to take a stand against police brutality towards African-Americans and call for justice for George Floyd and his family.

Demonstrations have also began to spring up in the UK over the weekend, as thousands of people defied lockdown to join anti-racism rallies in London, Cardiff and Manchester on Sunday.

A Black Lives Matter protest is now also proposed to go ahead in Edinburgh's Princes Street Gardens this Sunday (7 June) at 1pm. The organisers have made clear that they intend for the demonstration to be "peaceful" - and not a "riot".

A description for the event reads: "As America mourns the loss of George Floyd, killed by a police officer, London have announced their protest on the 7th, Scotland need to join everyone and show our support against racism and discrimination as this is very much alive in the UK.

"Please meet at the East side of Princes Street Gardens by the Gallery."
