George Enescu Competition opens 2026 edition with global call to young musicians

The clock is ticking for young classical musicians looking to make their mark on one of the world’s most prestigious stages.

Applications are now open for the 2026 edition of the George Enescu International Competition, a landmark event that continues to shape the careers of emerging artists across the globe.

Set to take place in Bucharest from August 23 to September 19, the competition marks its 20th anniversary under the theme "In Pursuit of Excellence."

First held in 1958, it is now part of the World Federation of International Music Competitions and is widely regarded as one of the leading platforms for emerging classical talent.

Often given the title as a career-making stage: the competition places works by George Enescu, Romania's renowed composer, at the centre of its repertoire and gives laureates access to future performances, mentoring and artistic representation.

Open to musicians born after August 1, 1991, the contest features four sections: violin, cello, piano, and composition.

Participants will compete across multiple rounds held at key venues in Bucharest, including the National University of Music and the Romanian Athenaeum.

A distinguished international jury made up of leading performers, composers, and educators will oversee the selection process, offering not just evaluation but exposure to top figures in the industry.

Beyond its €150,000 prize fund, the competition’s real value lies in its career opportunities.

Winners gain access to performances with major orchestras, mentorship, and crucially, the chance to perform at future editions of prestigious George Enescu International Festival, cementing its reputation as a launchpad for global recognition.

For young musicians aiming to step onto the international stage, this is not just another competition but rather a defining opportunity. Application link can be found here.

Applications close on May 10, 2026 for instrumental sections, and June 30 for composition.

The competition will take place from August 23rd to September 19th 2026 in Bucharest.
