George Edmundson update as Rangers loanee given Wayne Rooney stamp of approval ahead of Derby squad bow

Boss Wayne Rooney hopes to quickly improve the fitness of Rangers loanee George Edmundson ahead of his Derby debut.

The defender was frozen out of the Ibrox first-team after a breach of Covid rules saw him handed a seven-game Scottish FA ban.

After failing to break into Steven Gerrard's plans he was shipped out on loan to Pride Park on deadline day, but has yet to be given a run out by boss Rooney following a hernia injury.

The 23-year-old is set to be included in the squad for the Championship clash with Wycombe, but England legend Rooney won't rush him into the side.

He told the Derby Telegraph: "He has been training in the last few days, he will be involved in the game against Wycombe which is great it gives us another option.

"He has been good in training and it will be good for him, and the team to have him involved.

"He hasn't played a lot of football in the last couple of months so we have to manage him right.

"He is itching to get out there and play.

"He gives me another option whether I want to use him in defence or in midfield."
