George Edmundson leaves Rangers and insists he 'couldn't turn down' Ipswich Town move

George Edmundson admitted the chance to join Ipswich Town was too good to turn down after sealing his Rangers exit.

Record Sport exclusively revealed at the weekend that the Light Blues had agreed to sell the stopper and that the Tractor Boys were in pole position to sign the 23-year-old.

And the former Oldham Athletic man completed his move to the Tractor Boys - reportedly in the region of an initial £750,000 deal - after insisting he had to jump at the chance.

Edmundson, who penned a four-year deal at the League One side, said: “The opportunity came along and it was one I couldn't turn down.

"I spoke to the gaffer and it really excited me. He was a massive pull and this is also a huge club.

“Having also spoken to Mark Ashton (CEO), he has been very clear about the culture being built at the club and the importance of engaging with the local community - that's something I also consider to be very important.

"I like the sound of the project here and I can see the intent the Club has, so I'm delighted to have signed."

Edmundson made 17 appearances and scored his only goal in the final game before football was halted due to the pandemic in the home Europa League defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.

His best performance came in the previous round when he was a standout in the victory over Braga in Portugal.

However, a breach of Covid rules saw him pick up an SFA suspension and he was later sent to Derby County on loan, who were also in the race for his signature.

Ipswich Town boss Cook said: “George is at a great age but he also already has good experience in the game. We’re delighted to have him with us.

“He’s strong, a good talker, comfortable on the ball and he wants to play regular first-team football.

“I first came across him when he was on loan at AFC Fylde because they played Wigan in the FA Cup and took us to a replay. He was strong on the day and we’ve followed him ever since.

“We really think he’ll be a strong addition to the squad.”
