George Edmundson a Rangers transfer target as Steven Gerrard eyes highly-rated defender

Rangers are targeting a summer move for highly-rated Oldham defender George Edmundson.

Record Sport can confirm the Ibrox side are keen to bring the £450,000-rated defender to Ibrox this summer.

The 21-year-old has earned rave reviews for his performances with the Latics this season and the likes of Hull and Stoke City are also reportedly keen.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is on the hunt for defensive reinforcements with Joe Worrall set to return to Nottingham Forest when his loan deal expires.

Veteran stopper Gareth McAuley has failed to make any sort of impact at Ibrox and will leave when his contract expires in a few weeks.

Gerrard missed out on Rennes defender Mexer who signed a pre-contract deal with Bordeaux and Rangers are now looking at alternative targets.

Edmundson played 54 games for Oldham this season in all competitions and the likes of Sunderland and Fleetwood Town are also monitoring his development.

He is understood to have been given a tour of the Hummel Training Centre last week in a bid to lure him north.

Rangers haven't wasted anytime getting down to business ahead of the window opening with Jake Hastie and Jordan Jones agreeing pre-contract deals.

Steven Davis has signed on for next season while Greg Stewart has agreed a three-year deal and will sign up shortly.

Meanwhile, Mark Allen hopes Rangers can become less reliant on loan signings moving forward.

The success of Ryan Kent has shown the model can work but the director of football hopes to seal more permanent signings moving forward.

He said: “It’s going to be strengthening bearing in mind the number of games we are hoping to be playing again next season.

"I think the loan market is something that can work for us as a football club with our financial model and the way we operate.

“However, we are trying to become less and less reliant on it because ultimately I’d like to provide a situation where we’re getting returns on investments for the players we sign - but it’s a fine balance."
