George Diaz: Christy Martin, still standing strong after attempted murder, years of domestic violence

ORLANDO, Fla. _ Christy Martin survived when her then-husband stabbed her, shot her, and then left her to die.

She has overcome addictive tendencies that could have killed her as well.

She survived a stroke that "erased a (bleep-load) of memory."

She has struggled with her sexual identity, finally coming to terms that she was gay.

If all this sounds like a crazy tale and a hellacious movie, well it is, which is why she is hoping to close a deal within months so the production company can begin filming. Amy Schumer has been tentatively cast to play her role.

Christy told me Monday that the casting company is having a hard time finding an actor to play her former husband, Jim Martin, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison on a charge of attempted second-degree murder with a firearm in June of 2012.

Seems no one wants to play such a sadistic, misogynistic role in the world of the #MeToo movement.

Martin, who recently turned 50, now proudly raises her voice for domestic violence survivors. She's in a far different place now, far removed from her small-town roots as a coal miner's daughter from West Virginia. She would move to Orlando to become the biggest draw in female boxing history in the late 1990s, while also popping up on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

The huge wave of publicity and fame and fortune (long gone) happened from their home base in Apopka. It is where Martin tried to kill her in 2010. By then, everything had unraveled into much chaos. The marriage had already died, and then Christy almost did. She managed to live after crawling out of the house and flagging down help.

She moved from Orlando that same year and now lives in North Carolina, where she works as a substitute teacher. She recently married, and returned to Orlando this week to give a speech at the Association of Boxing Commissions on Monday night.

We caught up for coffee and conversation earlier in the day.

She was accompanied by her wife, Lisa Holewyne, a former female fighter who faced off against Christy in 2001. Martin won by unanimous decision.

As noted previously, hellacious movie.
