George Clooney thinks he would look like James Bond's 'grandfather' as he backs Idris Elba for 007 role

George Clooney thinks he would look like James Bond’s “grandfather” if he took the iconic role.

The Hollywood star downplayed any rumours he could step into the 007 shoes after Daniel Craig, pointing out that he thinks he’s too old for it.

Appearing on Friday’s Good Morning Britain via video, Clooney laughed when he was shown as mock-up of himself as the iconic spy by presenters Kate Garraway and Charlotte Hawkins.

“I look like James Bond’s grandfather,” Clooney smiled. “I’ll tell you this though, I have said this before, I’ll say it 1,000 times - Idris Elba should be Bond, period.

Explaining why he’s championing the Luther star for the lead role, Clooney said: “He’s elegant and he’s handsome. He should be Bond.

“I’m shocked that they haven’t just offered it to him right now, he’s the guy to do it.”

Taking over? Idris Elba gave Daniel Craig some serious sideeye at the Golden Globes (Idris Elba)

Elba, who has also turned his hand to directing and DJing, has been strongly linked to taking over Bond when Craig departs after Bond 25. The actor even trolled fans with a selfie next to Craig at the Golden Globes earlier this year, but later said he "needs to stop fuelling the rumours".

Idris Elba jokes about Bond rumours on Yardie red carpet

Speaking on The Official Big Top 40 Show he said of the selfie: "I've just got to stop fuelling the rumours. That was Daniel and me just having a bit of a laugh. I never get to see him and he started the rumours in the first place. He was the one that said Idris should do it.

"So when I saw him, we took that picture. It was a bit of a laugh to be honest."

Elba is the star of new Netflix comedy Turn Up Charlie, which he also wrote, and stars as struggling DJ Charlie who takes a job as a 'manny' to make ends meet.

Good Morning Britain is on ITV, weekdays at 6am
