George Clooney describes Meghan Markle criticisms as 'unfair' but reveals she doesn't complain

George Clooney has described the negative media attention surrounding the Duchess of Sussex as “unfair”, “unkind” and “unjust”.

The Hollywood actor, who attended the royal wedding last May with wife Amal Clooney, said he knows what it feels like to be targeted by the press and explained that the criticisms surrounding Meghan Markle are completely unfounded.

“It’s a little unfair at times when… I’ve seen it when the press can turn on you for sort of ridiculous reasons and for almost nothing, and it seemed to me to be a little unjust since she hadn’t done anything except just happen to live her life,” Clooney told Good Morning Britain hosts Charlotte Hawkins and Kate Garraway.

“She’s a really kind and smart and intelligent young woman and they’re a really wonderful, loving couple. Most of it you can just shrug off and not pay attention to, but sometimes it’s unkind.”

Clooney has previously compared the media's treatment of Markle to that of the late Princess Diana in light of the way she continues to be scrutinised for everything from her baby shower to her fashion choices.

But the 57-year-old actor insisted that Markle, who starred in legal drama Suits for seven seasons, copes very well with negative attention.

“She was an actress long before this and she’s been in the public spotlight for a long time,” Clooney said. “She’s a grown up and knows how to handle it so I think she’s absolutely fine.”

The Ocean’s Eleven star added that Markle is “not a complainer, she takes everything in stride.”

Clooney, who was speaking to the TV hosts from Edinburgh, added that Markle and Prince Harry are “a really good couple” and described them as “really nice” and “really fun”.
