George Clarke works with Northumbria Uni to 'change the future of housing'

Renowned TV architect George Clarke has partnered with Northumbria University in a project looking into changing how houses are designed and built in the future.

Northumbria University has signed an agreement with Clarke’s charity, the Ministry of Building Innovation and Education (MOBIE) to work together in the transformation of the housing sector.

The University is helping to provide businesses involved in the design and delivery of homes with the latest in innovation to help drive the change in the development of homes in the future.

The new MOBIE Northumbria Homes for the Future Innovation Centre aims to make the building of houses a more efficient and precise process.

The Centre plan to do this by looking into new methods of construction, design, offsite manufacture, digital competencies and materials used.

Northumbria University will be offering 15 co-funded PhD studentships who will work on the project.

The studentships will run over the next three years being jointly funded by the University and businesses meaning approximately £10,000 will be invested each year.

Each business involved will work with experts from Northumbria University to develop a suitable plan for each partner.

One of the 15 PhD students selected will work on each project alongside their studies, providing them with the new knowledge and skills to help the future of housing development.

George Clarke explained: “We need to provide businesses in the construction sector with affordable access to the very latest in research and development.

“By partnering with Northumbria University and appointing doctoral students to work with the businesses, we can ensure we are passing on the very latest in research and thinking into the building sector to transform the way it works.

“Ultimately, we want to create better quality homes that will drive a better quality of life for everyone living in them.”
