George Burgess makes astonishing rugby league return after securing NRL contract

George Burgess is back in rugby league after signing a deal with NRL side St George Illawarra Dragons.

George, one quarter of the famous 'Burgess Bros', called time on his career at the end of last season after a hip injury caused him continuous problems.

Burgess had signed for Wigan Warriors ahead of the 2020 season to be one of their marquee players but managed just eight appearances before stepping away from the game to undergo life-changing hip resurfacing surgery.

He had signed a three-year deal with the Warriors, but he will not be returning to the club despite both sides saying they would be open to reuniting if he dusted off the boots.

Now 29, the prop has recovered from the procedure and such has been the success of his recovery, he has decided to return to the game.

He will do so back in the NRL, where he spent the majority of his career and where he won the Premiership alongside his brothers for South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2014.

The Dragons say Burgess will return to the field next season and has signed a two-year deal with the club.

"George will make a significant contribution to us here at the Dragons on and off the field; his experience and career achievements will only have a positive influence on the development of the younger players currently within our squad," general manager Ben Haran said.

"While he has some obstacles still to overcome following his well-documented surgery, our medical staff have already commenced working with George on his rehabilitation.

"Everyone is committed to helping George get back to his fighting best ahead of the 2022 season, but no person more than George himself. We're looking forward to him and his family joining the club."
