George Barker murder: Suspect in brutal 2016 gym killing arrested in Cyprus

A man police want to interview over the brutal murder of George Barker who was stabbed to death outside in gym in south-east London has been arrested in Cyprus.

Charles Riddington has been held in the Turkish-controlled part of the island over speeding offences.

Mr Barker, 24, from South Darenth in Kent, was stabbed repeatedly in the chest and stomach.

Mr Barker had been warming up for a Thai boxing class when he was set upon by a group of men. Mr Barker’s partner, CJ, had given birth to their baby daughter just five days earlier.

Police previously said Riddington was known to have travelled to Dussledorf in Germany under the alias of Barry Ryan.

In a statement on Tuesday, a spokesman said: “The Metropolitan Police is aware that Charles Riddington has been arrested and detained in Cyprus.

“Our understanding is that he has been arrested for local matters and that an investigation is ongoing. We await the outcome of that investigation.

“The Metropolitan Police is continuing with its investigation into the murder of George Barker and continue to work tirelessly to bring the offender to justice by all lawful and legitimate means.”

Hundreds gathered for an emotional vigil after Mr Baker's death. His mother, Julie, said at the time: “Who would do this? He didn’t deserve this. He had a beautiful young baby.

“Just look at all the flowers – he was so popular. Everyone was his friend. He was a lovely young man. Loads of people turned out for him.”
