George Baldock is Celtic transfer target as Ange Postecoglou seeks right back solution

Sheffield United’s George Baldock has re-emerged as a Celtic transfer target.

Ange Postecoglou ’s rebuild is set to get underway this week with the reported arrival of Croatian defender Mario Vuskovic.

With just over three weeks until the Hoops face FC Midtjylland in their Champions League qualifier, the new boss has to recruit quickly to strengthen his squad.

And the Daily Record reports that full back Baldock is among his list of targets.

The right back was on Celtic’s radar two years ago when popular Swede Mikael Lustig left, but the 28-year-old opted to remain at Bramall Lane for the Blades’ English Premier League campaign.

However, former manager Chris Wilder is no longer in charge and with United having been relegated to the Championship, Celtic are now a more attractive proposition to Baldock.

Wilder’s replacement Slavisa Jokanovic is running the rule over his pool of players and is expected to make changes at the South Yorkshire club.

Baldock penned a new contract last year so Celtic would need to pay a fee for him, and United’s asking price may well determine whether they make a move.

Right back has been a problem position for the Scottish Premiership runners up.

Jeremie Frimpong’s £11.5m switch to Bayer Leverkusen while Hatem Abd Elhamed returned home to Israel for family reasons.

Jonjoe Kenny was drafted in on loan from Evert to help see out last season but the England Under 21 international wasn’t overly impressive as Celtic limped over the finish line to end a disastrous season.

Anthony Ralston remains on the books but Postecolgou will want a more experienced alternative for the right hand side of his defence.

There are likely to be further departures as well, with Norwich City, Newcastle United and Leverkusen tracking centre back Kris Ajer.

Russians Zenit St Petersburg are also now interested according to reports over there.

Contract talks with striker Odsonne Edouard are scheduled but it remains unlikely that the France Under 21 star will be at Parkhead for the long term.
