George Alagiah says 'I’m in bowel cancer limbo... but I won’t surrender to it'

George Alagiah has said he is in limbo over his cancer, but added he is not “sticking his hands up” and giving in.

The BBC News at Six presenter was first treated for bowel cancer in 2014, but revealed in 2017 that the disease had returned.

George, 63, returned to the newsroom at the Beeb in January.

Speaking at the launch of his book The Burning Land, he said: “The way I look at it is that I am in a state of limbo. I was diagnosed with cancer back in 2014. Lots of operations and lots and lots of chemo. For a couple of years, it seemed to go away.

“I am in this position where it rears its head... and the doctor puts it back into its hole. I finished the treatment a month ago and I will know soon whether it’s worked or not. The main thing is I am not sticking my hands up and neither are my doctors.”

He said the cancer had delayed the release of his political thriller, adding: I didn’t have the head-space to think.”

In June, the broadcaster, 63, announced he was undergoing more treatment , but that he would remain on BBC News At Six as much as he could.

Alagiah underwent 17 rounds of chemotherapy to treat advanced bowel cancer in 2014, before returning to presenting duties in 2015.

However, in January 2018 he disclosed that the cancer had returned.
