George Alagiah returns to present BBC news after beating coronavirus

BBC news presenter George Alagiah has returned to work hosting the evening news after beating coronavirus.

The 64-year-old newsreader, who is battling stage 4 cancer, was praised by viewers and colleagues alike when he made his return to the 6-o-clock news on Tuesday.

Last month, George revealed he had been diagnosed with the potentially deadly COVID-19 virus and was forced to stay away from the newsroom.

Fellow news host Sophie Raworth had praised George ahead of his TV return by revealing he would be back to host the news after fighting both coronavirus and cancer.

Sharing a photo of her colleague on Twitter, Sophie wrote: “6 years ago today I ran @bostonmarathon and raised money for cancer research - days after @BBCAlagiah phoned to say he had stage 4 cancer.”

She continued: “I called him at finish. 6 yrs later he’s back on at 6 tonight after getting over coronavirus.”

She added: “The man’s extraordinary.”

Viewers were equally thrilled to see George back on screens.

One fan tweeted: “George Alagiah, beaten COVID, living with terminal cancer but still presenting @BBCNews at 6 with eloquence and class, as ever. @BBCAlagiah you are great!”

George is battling stage 4 bowel cancer and revealed at the end of March that he had been diagnosed with the potentially deadly COVID-19 virus.

However, after being diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2014 and again in 2017, the news host said he was ready to fight the virus.

He said at the time: “I don’t want to trivialise because I seem to have had a mild dose, but actually, the very fact that we [cancer patients] are living with cancer I think gives us an edge.”

He added: “We’ve confronted those difficult, dark moments in our life.”
