Geordie acting talent turns out to audition for roles in Tyneside gangster drama Moreland's Firm

Television hopefuls today turned out to audition for a part in new Geordie gangster drama Moreland's Firm.

Budding screen stars and seasoned actors have applied to be part of the new series, which will be filmed around Tyneside this summer.

The series, penned by Whitley Bay writer Danny Cox, tells the story of gangster Michael Moreland who tries to strike the balance between a happy home life and running his criminal empire.

Geordie actor Craig Conway, of Our Friends in the North fame, has been cast in the lead role. And former Emmerdale actress Victoria Temperley, formally known as Vicky Hawkins, from Birtley in Gateshead will play his wife Beth.

Stephen Tompkinson features as old time gangster Dave Guppy.

While doorman-turned actor Steve Wraith, from Gateshead , takes on the role of Michael's right-hand man Owen Walton.

A casting call was held in Newcastle city centre for the remaining roles, and Geordies turned up in their droves.

Steve said: "We have seen some great talent today, some were well known actors some first timers.

"We want this to be a North East production which showcases North East talent. The aim is to shoot the trailer late August then have an evening screening for investors to fund the pilot which we will shoot next year."

Danny has been working on the scripts, characters and stories that make-up Moreland’s Firm for more than 15 years, with help from Steve.

He previously told the Chronicle: “I’m sure this can do for Tyneside what The Sopranos did for New Jersey and this is one man’s fight with his own emotions.

“The first incarnation of Michael Moreland was probably around fifteen years ago. I lost the original script on an old laptop but fortunately Steve had a copy and I was able to re-familiarise myself with it from there."

The show had been in production five years ago, but was put on hold after tragedy struck when a member of the team, Neil Mcevul was diagnosed with a terminal illness.

The trailer will be shot on Tyneside in August and September by NE Films and directed by Ferson.
