Geoffrey Boycott launches Manchester United rant live on MUTV

Geoffrey Boycott gave a scathing assessment of Manchester United's current plight and questioned the credentials of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - live on the club's in-house television channel.

The former England cricketer said United have been 'hard to watch' this season while being interviewed at the club's player of the year awards.

The Reds bridged the 11-point gap to the top four during the first half of Solskjaer's tenure but a run of eight points from eight league games squandered their chance of Champions League qualification.

United's 1-1 draw against Huddersfield last Sunday was the final nail in the coffin of their top-four hopes, and Boycott said he has been dismayed by United's recent showing.

"Disappointment more than anything," he replied, when asking what Manchester United mean to him at present.

"For half of the season there was hope, some enjoyment, some good times. And somehow it's kind of faded away towards the end. The football hasn't been inspiring if anything they've let themselves down and the people who support Manchester United, because I think they're a bit better than that.

Manchester United targeting early signings in transfer window

Manchester United manager asked about Daniel James transfer speculation

"It's not just the results, but some of the football has been hard to watch."

Solskjaer won his first eight matches in charge at Old Trafford after taking over from Jose Mourinho on December 19 before a run of two wins in nine followed after his appointment as permanent manager during the international break in March.

And Boycott is not convinced that Solskjaer has the relevant experience to succeed at United.

"He does but he doesn't have a record of experience, does he?" the 78-year-old said.

"He did at short time at Cardiff and then resigned honoruably. He's looked after a team in his home country but it's not the Premier League."
