Fifty years after England’s greatest triumph, the shirt of their 1966 hat-trick scorer Geoff Hurst is to go on sale and is expected to fetch an estimated £300,000 to £500,000.
The No10 long-sleeved red jersey, manufactured by Umbro, is to be put up for auction by Sotheby’s on 12 July.
The West Ham striker achieved lasting fame after becoming the first and only player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final when England beat West Germany 4-2 at Wembley.
Gabriel Heaton of Sotheby’s said: “This shirt, worn by the match’s star player, is the most significant obtainable artefact relating to this historic match. It represents a legendary moment in the annals of English football, and a sporting achievement that has never been repeated in half a century.”
Hurst had begun the campaign as one of the substitutes but took his place in the starting line-up after Jimmy Greaves suffered an injury. He will forever be associated with Kenneth Wolstenhome’s television commentary as he completed the scoring in extra-time: “Here comes Hurst… some people are on the pitch. They think it’s all over… it is now!”
The sale comes two days after the final of Euro 2016.
