BBC period drama Gentleman Jack, based on the real-life diaries of Anne Lister, is returning to BBC One.

The first series - which aired in 2019 - averaged 6.8 million viewers across its run and many fans are now eager to see what's next in store for landowner, traveller and business woman Anne Lister and her new wife Ann Walker.

Suranne Jones is set to reprise her role as Anne as the Sally Wainwright drama returns with eight brand new one-hour episodes set in 1834.

Here's all the details we have so far on the second series of the BBC period drama:

When is the second series of Gentleman Jack going to air on BBC?

Although we don't have a confirmed date for the release of series two, we do know that Gentleman Jack will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer in Spring, 2022.

If you'd like to catch up or re-watch the first series, all episodes are now available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

A synopsis for series two from the BBC reads: "Yorkshire, 1834. All eyes are on Anne Lister and Ann Walker as they set up home together at Shibden Hall as wife and wife, determined to combine their estates and become a power couple.

"Anne Lister’s entrepreneurial spirit frightens the locals as much as her unconventional love life and, with Halifax on the brink of revolution, her refusal to keep a low profile becomes provocative and dangerous."

The series two Gentleman Jack cast:

In new teaser images of season two Suranne Jones is seen returning as the iconic Anne Lister and Sophie Rundle as Anne Lister’s now wife, Ann Walker.
