Gentle traditional Japanese sounds for people staying home

Ahead of the arrival of summer, work to paint Edo wind chimes has reached its height at a long-established store in Edogawa Ward, Tokyo.

The wind bells, created using techniques dating back to the Edo period (1603-1867), makes a summery sound even in a slight wind. Shipments usually peak around this time, but this year, Shinohara Furin Honpo, the company producing the chimes, has stopped selling products at its store and is not offering painting lessons due to the spread of the new coronavirus.

"The sound of the wind chimes is soft and gentle," said Emi Shinohara, president of the company. "As people have been more and more stressed out because of staying home for a long time, we hope they find the chimes helpful in finding a sense of calm, even if it's just a little bit."
