'Gentle and courageous' Cardiff councillor Wendy Congreve dies after battle with illness

Tributes have been paid to Cardiff councillor Wendy Congreve, who has died.

Cllr Congreve, a Liberal Democrat councillor for the Cyncoed ward of Cardiff, died on Tuesday May 14 after an illness.

She has been described as a popular councillor in her community who had "gentle courtesy" and a "fiercely independent mind".

Leader of Cardiff Council, Cllr Huw Thomas, said: “We all are deeply saddened at the loss of our friend and colleague, Cllr Wendy Congreve.

Cllr Congreve was a popular Councillor in her community, and I want to express our thanks and gratitude for the hard work Wendy gave over many years on the city’s behalf. Our thoughts and prayers are with Wendy’s family.”

Cllr Congreve was elected to Cardiff council in 2017 after previously serving on South Glamorgan County Council, on which she represented Lakeside.

Leader of the city Liberal Democrat group Cllr Joe Boyle said she was "thrilled to return to local politics in 2017".

He said: “We are quite stunned by the loss of Wendy. Our first thoughts are with her family, her children and grandchildren.

"She took her roles on the planning committee and school governor selection panel seriously but most loved working in her community, together with her ward colleague Cllr Bablin Molik who will feel this loss deeply.

"Her involvement through community groups and, formerly, as chair of governors at Cardiff High School meant she was an important local presence.

“We'll remember her for the courage she showed in the face of recent illness, her gentle courtesy and her fiercely independent mind.”
