Geno Smith takes step forward in backup quarterback competition

The Seattle Seahawks traded off backup quarterbacks in the last two weeks.

Paxton Lynch handling the backup duties last week against the Vikings while Geno Smith recovered from a minor knee procedure – while this week it was Smith out there against the Chargers while Lynch sat out with concussion symptoms.

While Lynch struggled last week, Smith excelled against the Chargers. He completed 11 passes on 18 attempts for 117 yards, while also rushing six times for 24 yards, including a touchdown.

“I thought Geno was pretty efficient,” coach Pete Carroll commented after the game. “I thought he made some nice plays, did a nice job on the move. This was his game with [QB] Paxton [Lynch] not playing.”

Smith and Lynch have been battling for the backup quarterback job all summer, and both players have had their moments and their struggles.

“I just think that I need to keep working and try not to worry about the things that I can’t control,” Smith commented after the game. “Instead, just focus on getting better every day and being the best player I can be every day. I have a lot of confidence in myself, but obviously, you have to keep working. Nothing is set in stone ever.”

Smith and Lynch will each get a lot of playing time in Seattle’s preseason finale, which will take place on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 7:00 p.m. PT.
