Genk 2-2 West Ham: Said Benrahma brilliant as David Moyes celebrates 1,000 games in management

West Ham United remain undefeated in the Europa League this season after a second-half turnaround in Genk.

While Tomas Soucek’s late own goal denied them a win in Belgium, Said Benrahma’s brilliance after the interval almost had David Moyes celebrating on his 1,000th game in charge following a difficult first-half at the Cegeka Arena.

Indeed, the Premier League’s in-form team were extremely lucky not to have been trailing by more than one goal after only five minutes and perhaps would have had Genk been able to apply the finishing touch. At times during the first-half, Moyes’ team looked sluggish and simply could not control the midfield, with Genk breaking through with ease.

Still, what’s so impressive about this West Ham side is their ability to create their own momentum. After returning from the break, Declan Rice started to pass the ball quicker and the excellent Benrahma thrived through the middle when he and Manuel Lanzini swapped positions.

It’s worth remembering Genk had scored 12 times in the two league games heading into the fixture and, while they did look dangerous, it took an unfortunate own goal to deny West Ham their fourth consecutive win in Europe.

Never write David Moyes’ West Ham off.
