The snack food aisle is one of many Americans’ favorite places in the grocery store. Choosing your favorite is a personal journey to fulfillment—or at least a spike in your blood glucose.
Are all snacks created equally? No. Many believe there are actually variations in the quality of the same item.
A viral claim that’s been pinging around the web for a while concerns Cheez-It crackers.
Die-hard fans believe that a Kansas factory makes the best Cheez-Its. They say there’s a trick to make sure your box was made in this facility, arguably guaranteeing you’re getting top-of-the-line Cheez-Its.
A brief history of Cheez-It crackers
The snack food industry is cutthroat. Every year brands debut countless flavors of chips, crackers, and pretzels in the hopes of capturing a larger market share.
Cheez-Its have been a dominant force for over 100 years. The simple crackers made of wheat flour, vegetable oil, cheese, skim milk, salt, and spices debuted in 1921.
Cheez-It inventor Green & Green Company of Weston, Ohio originally marketed the snack as a “baked rarebit,” which referred to melted cheese over toast.
In 1932, Sunshine Biscuits acquired Green & Green. The Keebler Company bought Sunshine biscuits in 1996. Then Kellogg’s bought Keebler in 2001. In 2023, Kellogg’s spun its snack food division off to create Kellanova.
Mars, Inc. inked a deal to buy Kellanova for $35.9 billion last year. The transaction should close this year.
Where are the best Cheez-Its made?
Brian and Zach of The Makeshift Project recently offered some advice to Cheez-It afficionados.
“There’s a way to get the best Cheez-Its in America,” Zach says in the episode. He says that the serial number is all you need.
Zach claims that the Kansas Cheez-It serial numbers all start with the letter ‘k.’ He says the factory in Kansas is “known to be the best Cheez-Its facility in the country.”
Others have echoed this belief. A Redditor recently said they’d purchased a box with a ‘k’ in the serial number. “Can confirm—are delish,” they wrote.
Many also believe that Costco has top-tier Cheez-Its. Zach says this is because the store sells so many, meaning that the crackers are consistently fresher.

So does Kansas really make the best Cheez-Its? The internet is certainly convinced.
As Zach says, “If you look for that ‘k,’ best Cheez-It you will have in your life.’
Kellanova did not respond to an emailed inquiry sent Tuesday morning.
