Genius schoolgirl gets A* in physics GCSE - after taking exam six years early

A genius schoolgirl has achieved the equivalent of an A* in her physics GCSE - after taking the exam six years early.

Seojin Park, nine, was awarded the impressive mark - known as a Grade 8 - after studying hard at home during lockdown.

The Year 5 pupil, known as Ipin, was inspired by her science lessons last year and decided to focus on physics over the summer.

She already has a GCSE in higher maths after she took the exam in 2019 - when she was aged just seven, reports MyLondon.

Ipin is now studying for A Levels in the subjects and wants to become the youngest person to attend the University of Cambridge.

The brainy youngster, from Lewisham, is a pupil at Blackheath High School.

She said: "I like explaining topics to others and want to help people understand physics, so I want to become a professor at a university in the future.

"I would like to be the youngest person to attend the University of Cambridge."

When asked what her advice to other young pupils who want to excel at their studies would be, Ipin added: "I recommend that they study the subject in a way to have fun, as I do.

"I normally read books, watch science videos, play with materials and explain what I have learnt by writing on a whiteboard to my parents."

Rather than homeschool Ipin during the pandemic, her parents - who have not been named - opted for a different approach.

Her dad works as an auditor and her mum is a YouTube creator.

"We sourced useful materials or videos for her rather than teach her physics ourselves," they said.

"Ipin would then tell us what she had learned, so we ended up learning physics from her, not the other way around.

"We are so proud of her. It is not easy to be focused on one subject for so many hours, especially at her age."

Ipin took the exam externally with the support of her teachers, who supplied her with various materials during lockdown.

Her parents said that, as well as studying, their daughter also has numerous hobbies.

They said: "She loves swimming whenever she has spare time, so we moved to a house that is located right opposite a leisure centre.

"She is also fond of playing chess, she plays with her dad on the weekends and online on her own whenever she wants to do it."

Ipin also has interests in common with her classmates, they said.

"She really likes reading books, she is a power reader, and play computer games such as Minecraft," her parents added.

"Taking photos is definitely another hobby for her."

Sarah Skevington, head of juniors at Blackheath High School, said: "Ipin embodies the Blackheath High spirit as an ambitious, driven and passionate pupil who is set on following her dreams.

"We're proud that Ipin was able to achieve this during the pandemic whilst learning from home."

Carol Chandler Thompson, head at Blackheath High School, said: "The pandemic presented many difficult challenges for all schools.

"But now, we can reflect on the opportunities which arose, offering an insight into the future of education.

"Ipin is an excellent example of what can be achieved through innovations in learning that really became apparent during school closures."
