'Genius' Netflix trick allows woman to use her ex-boyfriend's account for free

From handing back their things to changing your relationship status on Facebook, there are several awkward things most of us go through after a breakup.

And if you used your ex’s Netflix account, a breakup could also spell disaster for your TV and film watching habits.

Now, one man has revealed a ‘genius’ trick that allowed his brother’s ex to access his account, long after they broke up.

The woman, who is unnamed, had changed her account profile picture to a loading wheel, and her account name to Settings, allowing her to sneakily access her account without her ex knowing.

Twitter user @yellowgengar2 tweeted about the trick, admitting he was so impressed the he wasn’t even angry.

He explained: “My brother's ex had been stealing our Netflix for the past two months now by disguising her account as “settings” and honestly I ain’t even mad.

“I’m just really disappointed in myself for actually believing that an account named “settings” would legitimately be Netflix settings.”

Several users have replied to applaud the woman’s ingenuity.

Netflix to track down users who use someone else's password

One user replied: “Remember in school when the teachers used to say, not everyone can be academic, some have to find there own version of being smart....THIS is one of those versions!”

Another added: “Let her keep it. She deserves it.”

Meanwhile, Netflix even replied to the tweet, simply writing: “Respect.”

If you’re worried about any exes using your account, thankfully it’s very simple to check who has used your account, and to block them.

How to stop someone from using your account

If someone is using your account without permission, do the following to prevent further use:

  1. Log into your Netflix acount
  2. Hover over your account name in the top right-hand corner of the screen and click ‘manage profiles’ from the drop-down menu
  3. On your account page, click ‘Sign out of all devices.’
  4. Netflix will prompt you to sign your Netflix account out of all devices currently using it. Click the blue 'Sign Out' button
  5. You'll see a green banner informing you that you've been signed out of all devices. Please note that it can take up to eight hours to take effect
  6. It’s also a good idea to change your password to make sure no sneaky exes can sign back into your account
