'Genius' dog figures out how to steal treats without its owner ever knowing

A golden retriever who has figured out how to beat its owner at his own game has been branded a "genius" by impressed fans on social media.

Many owners share clips of their pets being left alone in a room with treats to prove how well trained they are, but one dog has found a way to cheat the system to get both the praise and the snack at the same time.

The clip shows a man pulling open a drawer to dig out a treat, leaving it on a table in front of his dog and commanding his pet to leave the food before walking away.

As soon as the owner is out the room and the coast is clear, the retriever gobbles down the treat, seemingly failing the test at the first opportunity.

But the dog then pulls the drawer open with its mouth to remove another treat and sets it down on the table exactly where its owner had left it, before quickly remembering to push the drawer shut with its head to bury any evidence of cheating.

It then slumps its head down on the table, waiting for its owner to return and recognise the animal's admirable display of self-restraint.

The hilarious clip was shared on Twitter, racking up more than four million views, with one person replying to say: "That's incredible, I love the bit where the dog suddenly remembers it hasn't pushed the draw shut."

A second wrote: "We had a retriever, he was not allowed on furniture. Every morning he was flat out on floor when we got up, but settee was warm. Never saw him lie on it, he'd moved when he heard us on stairs."

A third replied: "Is this real if so this dog is a genius?"

And another wrote: "If there weren't pull threads to help the dog on the drawer, I might have bought this! He's been trained to do exactly what we see" - only for someone else to reply: "We all know this Anne. But it’s still funny and a cat couldn't do this!"
