Genesis Invitational: Tiger Woods Withdraws Ill And Given Intravenous Drip

Tiger Woods made his first start of 2024 at the Genesis Invitational where he worried fans by withdrawing "due to illness" in the second round as an ambulance was later seen outside the clubhouse.

The 15-time Major champion had played six holes on Friday and was +2 in total after being +1 for six holes. But Woods, 48, was not moving freely and appeared to be struggling before he abruptly got in a buggy on the seventh hole and returned to the clubhouse after teeing off.

Woods' withdrawal will disappoint fans but he later walked out of the clubhouse and Rob McNamara, Woods' longtime business partner and vice president of TGR Ventures, explained the situation.

He said: "He started feeling some flu-like symptoms last night. Woke up this morning, they were worse than the night previous. He had a little bit of a fever and that was better during the warm-up, but then when he got out there and was walking and playing, he started feeling dizzy. Ultimately the doctors are saying he's got potentially some type of flu and that he was dehydrated. He's been treated with an IV bag and he's doing much, much better. It was all medical illness, dehydration, which the symptoms are reversing themselves now that he's had an IV."

Genesis Invitational leaderboard

JASON DAY'S EAGLE AT THE 1ST

The former World No.1 finds himself co-leading at the moment, thanks to an eagle 3 at the first hole following on from his 65 yesterday.

LUKE LIST PUTTING THE LIGHTS OUT

The co-leader made well over 200ft of putts yesterday - and he's bogey-free two-under after six already today.

SCHEFFLER TEES OFF - CAN HE HOLE SOME PUTTS TODAY?

The World No.1 had yet another incredible ball striking day yesterday but had yet another frustrating day on the greens.

He was three-under-par and had ten birdie looks inside 15ft but ranked 69th in the 70-man field in putting, losing 2.572 strokes on the field.

FAMOUS RIVIERA MEMBERS

The host venue for the Genesis Invitational is one of the most prestigious in LA - and there are some very famous people to hold memberships at the club. Tom Brady, Adam Sandler and Larry David to name a few!

CUT LINE WATCH

Yes, there is a cut at the Genesis Invitational this week - apparently some players didn't even realise.

Not many players will be going home early though, as the top 50 and ties make it through from the 70-man field. At the moment there are just EIGHT players outside of the cut line. Those eight names include Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick.

RORY MCILROY IS OFF

The big group of Rory McIlroy (+3), Wyndham Clark (E) and Max Homa (+2).

Clark and McIlroy both miss the ultra-narrow fairway to the right before Homa pulls it left. No worries though, as it's a very reachable par 5 and also the easiest hole on the golf course.

TIGER HAS ARRIVED

Woods is on-site and it's going to be interesting seeing how he copes physically today after revealing he was suffering with back spasms late in his first round.

BRILLIANT SHOT FROM MCILROY

Rory McIlroy will have a very good look at eagle on the 1st to put himself back inside the cut line straight away. From 214 yards away, he hit a laser long iron to just 13ft.

BEAUTIFUL BIRDIE FROM TOMMY

Tommy Fleetwood - THE best player yet to win on the PGA Tour - makes a stunning birdie at the tricky 2nd to move into the top 20.

He's one of the game's best ball strikers and Riviera is a ball striker's paradise. Maybe Fleetwood could have himself a good weekend.

WYNDHAM CLARK EAGLES THE 1ST

The US Open champ holes a monster eagle putt on the 1st from 45ft!

Can McIlroy do the same? No, but it's a birdie and he's back to +2.

CUT WATCH

McIlroy is now inside the cut line and get this, there are currently SIX players projected to miss the cut.

WYNDHAM CLARK'S OPENING EAGLE

MCILROY STRUGGLING ON 2

Rory has pulled his approach left on the 2nd and it looks nasty. Not sure if he's in the bunker or the thick rough but either way he'll have a delicate shot ahead to a green sat above him with little room to work with.

BIG UP-AND-DOWN FROM RORY

McIlroy was in the greenside bunker left on the 2nd and played a delightful splash shot to around 6-8ft and duly holed it to stay at +2.

That should feel like a big momentum gain there.

JASON DAY TAKES THE OUTRIGHT LEAD

Day makes gets to three-under for the day, stuffing a wedge to within 5ft on the 8th hole and he rolls it in to reach nine-under-par.

ZALATORIS FALLS BACK

The American has had a sloppy finish to his front nine, ending bogey-bogey to fall back from six-under to four-under.

COOL TIGER SHIRT ON SHOW

Woods is out in just over 1hr 30mins.

BIRDIE FOR MCILROY

The World No.2 picks up his second birdie of the day on the third hole, where he rolls in a 20-footer, and he's back to even par for the tournament.

He's inside the cut line and back charging up the leaderboard. You love to see it.

DAY TURNS IN THREE-UNDER

The Australian heads to the iconic drivable 10th hole after a superb 32 (-3) to start his day.

He's at nine-under and leading on his own.

LIST BACK TO THE TOP

Luke List holes from 7ft on the 10th to re-join Jason Day at the top of the leaderboard. The pair are leading the field by two strokes as things stand.

SCHEFFLER CHIPS IN

The World No.1 is having no luck with the flat stick, but he didn't need it at the 5th where he chipped in from just off the green.

He's up to four-under now.

SCHEFFLER'S CHIP-IN

JASON DAY TO 10

The former World No.1 rolls in a 9-footer on the 10th after a superb pitch on the tricky, drivable par 4.

He becomes the first man to double-digits under-par this week.

CUT WATCH

From six players outside the line earlier, there's now 17! Tiger Woods is currently outside of the line, as is Rory McIlroy despite him being two-under for the day.

Going to be very interesting to see who misses - and how many miss.

SCHEFFLER CLIMBING

The World No.1 is up to T5 and within five of Jason Day after his second consecutive birdie. He stuck it to just 4ft on the 172 yard par 3 6th and slotted it home for a 2.

JASON DAY THREE-PUTT

Day had a great chance to move to 11-under after finding the par 5 11th green in two but he left his first effort short and right, and then missed his birdie chance just to the right, too.

TIGER WOODS IN A STRIPEY NUMBER TODAY

Woods has a navy gilet and a red/navy stripy polo underneath - of course from his brand new Sun Day Red range.

He tees off in an hour.

SCHEFFLER'S BIRDIE AT 6

TIGER'S POLO

Ok, the vest is off and turns out his polo is mainly white, with the navy/red sleeves.

I think it's a very smart look (big fan) despite plenty of critics of his new line since it was launched at the start of the week.

TIGER WEARING NEW EYE-CATCHING OUTFIT FROM HIS BRAND

Woods , who opted for white for his opening round, has a more colourful number on today from his new Sun Day Red range which appears to pay homage to his debut here as a 16-year-old amateur.

ZALATORIS HOLES ACE ON 14TH

What a shot from Will Zalatoris on the par 3 14th as he holes out from 184 yards to win both the player and his caddie a new Genesis GV80&GV70 car. That takes him to -1 for the round and -6 in total.

DAY DROPS A SHOT AT 12

Jason Day has slipped back to -9, level with Luke List, after a bogey at the 12th when his approach from 176 yards found the front bunker.

THE BOTTOM OF THE LEADERBOARD IS INTERESTING TOO

The 70-man field will be reduced tonight after round two with the projected cut line currently at +1 which would see Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy squeeze through as it stands. That leaves nine players outside at +2 or worse including Major champion Matt Fitzpatrick.

MACKENZIE HUGHES HOLES OUT AT 10

Mackenzie Hughes is just two shots off the lead after back-to-back birdies on 10 and 11 , including a superb chip in at the short tricky 10th hole.

WOODS' BID TO MAKE CUT UNDERWAY

Tiger has found the fairway off the first tee with his three-wood as his bid to make the cut gets started. Woods is right on the projected cut line at +1 at the moment but he is in good shape on the first after putting his second to the par 5 to 14 feet from where he would make birdie.

WHAT A START FROM PATRICK CANTLAY

Cantlay's 64 in round one was the lowest and he has got off to an amazing start in round two with an eagle on the par 5 first after a 206 yard approach to 14 feet. He is now -9 and out infront on his own.

SCHEFFLER HOLES OUT FROM BUNKER AFTER CHIPPING IN EARLIER

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler has had well-documented issues with his putting but he hasn't needed his flat stick today on the fifth, where he chipped in, and now on the 11th as well where he has just holed out from a greenside bunker to get to -7 and -4 for the day.

WOODS IN GOOD SHAPE ON THE SECOND

After a birdie on the first, Woods has put his approach on the second to 13 feet from the hole , which is near the front of the green. He failed to make another birdie but taps in for par.

McILROY LOOKING GOOD TO MAKE THE CUT AFTER EAGLE

McIlroy had a slow start at Riviera with an opening round of 74 to leave him in danger of missing the cut but he is -4 today after an eagle at the par 5 11th to get him to -1 in total and keep him inside the projected cut of +1.

TIGER IN DECENT SHAPE AT THIRD IN GREENSIDE POSITION

Woods' start is better than yesterday with the 15-time major champion -1 for two holes and greenside in two at the third. But Woods,48, doesn't appear to be moving as freely today after complaining of a back spasm yesterday when he shanked his approach on 18. He would go on to par the third.

DAY BUILDS ON SOLID 1ST ROUND

Jason Day's climb up the world rankings looks set to continue in 2024 after the former world No.1 made the top 20 again. The 13-time PGA Tour winner opened with a 65 yesterday and has followed that with a -2 after a 69 to join Luke List in the clubhouse on -8 after his second round 69.

WOODS DROPS HIS FIRST SHOT ON THE FOURTH

Woods faces a grind to make the cut after dropping a shot on the par 3 fourth when he missed the green on the right. But despite his advancing years and injuries, Tiger remains a huge hit with fans.

SPIETH CHIPS IN ON THE FIFTH TO GET TO -6

Jordan Spieth is an exciting watch as usual and is -1 for five holes today after this deft chip in.

WOODS SUFFERS SUCCESSIVE BOGEYS ON FOURTH AND FIFTH

Tiger is now +2 in total and one of 15 players in the 70-man field who are the wrong side of the projected cut line at +1. Woods appears to be struggling to get up and down with his short game whenever he misses the green like he did on the fourth and fifth.

BIG DRAMA WITH TIGER WOODS SEEN IN A BUGGY AS WITHDRAWS

Woods, who is the tournament host here, is withdrawing on his competitive comeback after six holes in round two. Organisers say it is "due to illness" amid claims other players are experiencing symptoms too of a stomach bug. Woods was driven off the course in a buggy and was seen with his head in his hands briefly.

WOODS MAY HAVE WITHDRAWN BUT McILROY STAYING FOR WEEKEND

Rory McIlroy was in danger of missing the cut after an opening 74 but he has come roaring back with a -5 round to get to -2 in total. His bogey-free round included three birdies and an eagle.

MAX HOMA ALSO IMPRESSES IN ROUND TWO

Max Homa has responded following a disappointing 73 with a fine -6 round of 65 to get to -4 in total. The Californian local had eight birdies including at the last two holes to thrill his loyal fans.

CANTLAY THE MAN TO CATCH

It must be days like this that caddie Joe LaCarva can have no regrets about leaving Tiger Woods' bag for Cantlay's. Cantlay is out infront and looking imperious at -11 with an eagle and two birdies so far on day two. He has also hit the green from 217 yards at the 12th.

DRAMA IN BATTLE TO MAKE THE CUT

The projected cut line is currently +1 meaning any players with a score greater than that after two rounds will be going home. This currently totals 17 players including Ryder Cup winner Sepp Straka, Major winners Wyndham Clark, Justin Thomas and Matt Fitzpatrick plus new pro Nick Dunlap,

FOLLOWING TIGER WOODS' WITHDRAWAL, AN AMBULANCE HAS BEEN SEEN OUTSIDE CLUBHOUSE

Woods withdrew from the second round earlier today after just six holes. His withdrawal was stated as "due to illness" amid reports other players are feeling under the weather too. An ambulance was subsequently seen by the club.

TOM KIM AND LEADER CANTLAY HIT 15TH GREEN FROM ROUGH

Tom Kim was just off the 15th fairway with a terrible lie in heavy round 225 yards from the green but the youngster smashed the ball on to the putting surface and was followed by Cantlay who hit an amazing shot from 214 yards to four feet at the 502-yard par four to set up a birdie.

WOODS DRIVEN AWAY FROM RIVIERA IN PLAYERS' COURTESY CAR

Woods has left the property after being driven away in a players' courtesy car. Rob McNamara, Woods' longtime business partner and vice president of TGR Ventures, told the media the golfer had had an intravenous drip for flu-like symptoms and dehydration after an ambulance was spotted outside the clubhouse sparking health concerns.

CANTLAY'S SECOND SUCCESSIVE FINE ROUND MAKES HIM HOT FAVOURITE

Patrick Cantlay showed the world his qualities in the Ryder Cup and he has put on a masterclass so far at Riviera. He has followed his opening -7 round of 64 with a 65 to get to -13 which gives him a five shot lead going into the weekend. Cantlay impressed with a smooth swing and a lot of sensible decisions to plot his way around in intelligent fashion. He may not be much of an entertainer but you have to admire this dominant display. While at the other end of the leaderboard several big names like Sepp Straka, Wyndham Clark, Justin Thomas, Keegan Bradley, Nick Dunlap and Matt Fitzpatrick finished above the cut of +1.
