UK general election news LIVE: Boris Johnson loses December bid for general election as EU approves Brexit delay until January 31

Boris Johnson's bid for a snap general election has failed.

Johnson secured 299 votes in favour of his motion with only 70 against, however, he needed 455 votes to pass it.

Labour refused to support an election on that date as students will have gone home for the Christmas holidays.

The Lib-Dems and the SNP have pitched another route to an election on December 9. The Prime Minister has told MPs the Government will give notice of a short Bill for a general election on December 12.

It comes after the EU agreed to delay Brexit until January 31.

The European Council president said the EU27 agreed the UK's request and a formal letter from Johnson to the EU Council has been released.
