General election: Labour's campaign war chest swells by £3.5million as unions back Corbyn's PM bid

Labour's campaign war chest swelled in the last week as trade unions backed Jeremy Corbyn's bid to become Prime Minister.

Labour received the most in donations, raking in £3,488,000 in weekly regulated period.

In the first week the party raised just £218,500, but have seen a reversal of fortunes as the trade unions funded the campaign.

The single biggest donation was £3 million from Unite the Union to Labour, with another significant donation from communications union the CWU.

It also comes after the party confirmed it had taken in £2.5million in small donations yesterday.

Conservatives were a not distant second after raising £2,967,000.

The Brexit Party was third with £2,250,000.

In the first week of the campaign the Conservatives raised £5.7m - which was 87% of registered donations in that period.

£9,073,750 in donations to political parties were reported to the Electoral Commission in the second weekly pre-poll report.

The Liberal Democrats received £251,000, Plaid Cymru £70,000, the Greens £37,750 and the SNP £10,000.

Prior to the election on 12 December, registered political parties must submit four weekly reports setting out the donations and loans over £7,500 that they have received between 6 November and 3 December 2019.

Two further reports must be submitted after polling day for the period 4 December to 12 December 2019.
