General Election candidate Catherine Noone under fire after telling voters to 'get a grip' over van parking

A Fine Gael General Election candidate has come under fire after she told voters to "get a grip" for pointing out her campaign bus was blocking pedestrians.

Senator Catherine Noone shared a picture of her 1967 Volkswagen camper van which had been newly wrapped for her election bid on Saturday.

The Dublin Bay North candidate's photo showed the van parked in Killester outside The Beachcomber pub.

But outraged constituents were quick to point out that that the bus was parked on a footpath and potentially blocking access for those with disabilities.

One woman said: "Well done parked on the footpath no thought for people in wheelchairs or visual impaired pedestrians you really are inconsiderate. Expect more from candidates."

Well-known disability campaigner Joanne O'Riordan added: "As a person who uses a wheelchair EVERY DAY this image is shocking!

"People like you who don’t think deny me and others the right to a proper more accessible environment.

"Your action and complete inaction make the lives of people with disabilities harder to live."

As more concerned locals continued to scold Senator Noone for the dodgy parking, she snapped back at one Twitter user.

In a since deleted tweet, she said: "Get a grip, you need to see the area it was parked in, cars always park there."

This statement drew an angry response with one man tweeting: "Your arrogance knows no bounds. We don’t need the likes of you in the Dáil, we’ve already had nine years of that."

Ms Noone, who has served in the Seanad since 2011, rowed back later the same night and admitted she shouldn't have parked on the footpath.

She tweeted: "I’m sorry about this, I genuinely didn’t realise it was parked on a footpath, I wasn’t there at the time and the photo was sent to me.

"I know it’s my responsibility. I realise now it very obviously was. I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again."
