General election: Boris Johnson claims Donald Trump was wrong about about Brexit deal flaws

Donald Trump was “patently in error” when he described the Tories latest Brexit deal as not living up to the promises of new trade deals with the US.

Mr Johnson was put on the defensive last week after the US Presiden said the US "can't make a trade deal with the UK" under the PM's EU withdrawal agreement.

In August, Mr Trump said he would do a "very big trade deal" with the UK and predicted that leaving the EU would be like losing "an anchor round the ankle".

But speaking to Nigel Farage on LBC earlier this week Mr Trump said: "To be honest with you... this deal... under certain aspects of the [Brexit] deal... you can't do it, you can't trade.

Mr Trump slammed the PM's deal (REUTERS)

"We can't make a trade deal with the UK because I think we can do many times the numbers that we're doing right now and certainly much bigger numbers than you are doing under the European Union."

Challenged by Sky's Sophy Ridge, Mr Johnson took aim at the President.

He said: "I’m afraid, I don’t wish to cast any aspersions on the President of the United States, but in that respect he is patently in error.

"Anybody who looks at our deal can see it is a great deal and what it does, is it allows us to take back control of our money, our borders and our laws. But, also, it allows us to have full unfettered control of our tariff schedules."
