General Election 2020: Social media reacts to Virgin Media TV debate as Leo Varadkar and Micheal Martin trade blows

Leo Varadkar and Micheal Martin did their best to convince voters that they should be the next Taoiseach after last night’s landmark leaders’ debate.

The two leaders were cagey and there were no killer blows landed, meaning the 2020 general election race is still wide open.

The Fine Gael and Fianna Fail leaders clashed for the first time in the election campaign in the first two person debate since 2007 - with not much to separate the sides.

Neither landed a killer blow in over 70 minutes’ of debate on Virgin Media Ireland, with each leader being almost too nice to each other.

And the biggest winner might have been Sinn Fein instead, who have taken legal action over their absence from last night’s debate, and RTE’s two-man leaders’ debate the week after next.

It was the decision to exclude leader Mary Lou McDonald from the debate that dominated most of the reaction on social media.

Many viewers were unhappy with the decision, with one branding the arrangement "outrageous", while another said it was a "bit mad".

Another suggested that Sinn Fein's presence could have led to higher TV ratings and more public interest in the show.
