General Election 2020: Social media reacts as Sinn Fein, Fianna Fail and Fine Gael trade blows on RTE's Claire Byrne debate

Representatives from all of the major parties joined Claire Byrne last night for a special climate debate just days before the country heads to the ballot box.

It came after a shock poll showed that Sinn Fein are the most popular political party in the country.

The party led by Mary Lou McDonald topped the list with a quarter of voters saying they'll vote Sinn Fein.

Fianna Fail are the second most popular party on 23%, while Fine Gael are on 20%.

Details of the Irish Times/Ipsos MRBI poll were released on Monday night, ahead of Saturday's General Election.

The findings were gathered last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Around 1,200 people across 120 locations took part in the poll.

One in five surveyed said they will vote for independents and other candidates, 8% chose the Green Party and just 4% picked a Labour candidate.

And shortly after the poll was released last night, members of all major parties joined Claire Byrne on RTE to discuss their climate policies.

However it was Fianna Fail's Dublin West candidate Jack Chambers who dominated most of the reaction to the debate.

Many on social media were critical of his "aggressive" performance, with one viewer saying his approach was "completely out of line".

Another claimed that the 29-year-old had done "nothing but attack everyone" over the course of the debate.

Conversely, others suggested that Mr Chambers had "a stormer", and that Fianna Fail voters across Ireland were "roaring him on" throughout the show.

Here is the best of the social media reaction to last night's debate:
