General Election 2020: Ruth Coppinger, Joan Burton and Mary Mitchell O'Connor among high profile names to lose seats

Ruth Coppinger, Joan Burton and Mary Mitchell O'Connor are among the high profile Dublin TDs to have lost their seats in the General Eelection.

In what has been a stunning election for Sinn Fein, who have made huge gains in the city and across the country, some big names have lost out.

Ms Coppinger had earlier admitted it was too tight to call for the last seat in Dublin West between herself and Green Party councillor Roderic O'Gorman.

In the end, O'Gorman took the seat just ahead of the Solidarity-People Before Profit TD, being declared elected without reaching the quota following the sixth count.

Labour rep Joan Burton had been eliminated on the previous count ending a long tenure as a TD for the area.

She was first elected to the Dail in Dublin West in 1992 before losing her seat in 1997.

The former Tanaiste regained the seat in 2002 and has held it ever since.

Mary Mitchell O'Connor had served as Minister of State for Higher Education since 2017 but lost out to party colleague Jennifer Carroll MacNeill in the Dun Laoghaire constituency.

Solidarity-People Before Profit's Richard Boyd Barrett retained his seat while the Green Party's Ossian Smyth was also elected.

In Meath East, Minister for Social Protection Regina Doherty has become another high profile casualty after she was eliminated after the sixth count.

Earlier today, Minister for Tourism, Transport and Sport Shane Ross also lost his seat when he was eliminated on the fifth count in Dublin Rathdown.

So far, 21 of the 45 seats available across the 11 Dublin constituencies have been filled.
