General Election 2020: Eoghan Murphy retains seat despite failing to reach quota in Dublin Bay South

Eoghan Murphy has scraped back into Leinster House after he was re-elected in Dublin Bay South despite not reaching the quota.

The outgoing Housing Minister was elected on the eighth count following the elimination of party colleague and sitting TD Kate O'Connell.

The 37 year old from Sandymount - who survived two votes of no confidence as Housing Minister during the last Dail term - tweeted afterwards that he was "humbled" to be re-elected.

He said: "I'm humbled to have been re-elected and will continue to work hard for what I believe is best for our country, our community and our future."

Green Party leader Eamon Ryan took the first seat in the constituency yesterday after he exceeded the 7,919 on the first count.

Sinn Fein's Chris Andrews reached the quota on the eighth count while Fianna Fail's Jim O'Callaghan was also deemed elected despite not reaching the quota.

Murphy was heckled as he arrived at the count centre in the RDS yesterday in what has been a difficult election campaign for the outgoing government.

Minister for Tourism, Transport and Sport Shane Ross lost his seat when he was eliminated on the fifth count in Dublin Rathdown.

Minister for Social Protection Regina Doherty was eliminated after the sixth count in Meath East last night while Junior Minister Mary Mitchell O'Connor lost out to party colleague Jennifer Carroll MacNeill in the Dun Laoghaire constituency.

Ms Mitchell O'Connor took to social media to declare she would be dedicating more time to her family after it was confirmed she had lost her seat.

She said: "Thank u to all Constituents who voted for me. I wish @CarrollJennifer @CormacDevlin @RBoydBarrett @smytho the very best in the future.

"Thank you to my team @TrishDublinBay @ClodAAAg for a great campaign. Handing the FG mantle over to Jennifer Carroll McNeill. I'm sure she will do a great job.

"To my two fine sons, their wives+ Esmè, I’ll be there for u from now on!"

Counting continues across the country with 94 out of 160 seats filled as of lunchtime on Monday.
