General Election 2020: Darragh O'Brien and Joe O'Brien elected on same count in Dublin Fingal after earlier name confusion

Two sitting TDs retained their seats in Dublin Fingal in a count that was delayed due to the similarity of several candidates' names.

Fianna Fail's Darragh O'Brien and the Green Party's Joe O'Brien secured their seats this afternoon following the ninth count at the National Show Centre near Dublin Airport.

They joined Sinn Fein's Louise O'Reilly who secured her seat yesterday after a first count that was delayed until 6pm.

The count was delayed due to confusion over tallies because of the similarities of some names on the ballot.

As well as the two O'Briens, there were also two Smiths (Labour's Duncan and United People's Alistair) as well as Louise O'Reilly and former Fine Gael deputy leader James Reilly.

Sinn Fein's Health Spokesperson achieved 15,792 on the delayed first count, a comfortable 5,000 votes above the quota of 10,574.

Dr Reilly indicated his time in politics may be over after he missed out on a seat.

He also said Fine Gael should “reflect long and hard” on Leo Varadkar's leadership following a poor showing for the party.

He told RTE News: “I think they will have to reflect long and hard on the current leadership. Does it work, does it not? I think there has to be a period of reflection, absolutely."

His running mate Alan Farrell secured the fourth seat in the constituency on the 11th count while there is a recount of Joe O'Brien's surplus with just 170 votes between Duncan Smith and Independents 4 Change candidate Dean Mulligan.
