General election 2019: Rachel Riley thanks UK as Labour tanks in exit poll after antisemitism row

TV host Rachel Riley has taken to Twitter to thank the UK after Labour tanked in the general election exit poll.

The poll predicted a Tory landslide and a dismal defeat for Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party.

Rachel, who is Jewish, has campaigned over social media to keep Labour out of Downing Street over the antisemitism scandal that's blighted the party.

She urged fans not to vote for Labour, and the 33-year-old telly star took to Twitter after the exit poll was announced to declare: "Love you Britain."

The Countdown star later responded to the backlash she received for the tweet, replying: "The inevitable abuse floods in.

"It's nothing compared to the relief of a minority community who've been living in fear of what might be. I won't apologise for that relief."

She went on to explain that she'd voted for former Labour member Chuka Umunna, now a Liberal Democrat.

Rachel added: "I voted for @ChukaUmunna, former Labour, who quit over antisemitism. I hope he wins.

"For now, we can breathe."

She was joined by Jewish actress Tracy-Ann Oberman, who wrote: "For last 2 years @RachelRileyRR & I have faced abuse beyond imagining. Lies smears violence.

"We stood against it all because we truly believe Corbyn responsible for allowing the anti Jewish racism & misogyny to go unchecked. His online hate army thought no one cared. YOU DID x."

The exit poll showed the Conservative Party could be set for a large majority in Parliament with 318 seats - Labour had the second most with 191.
