General election 2019: Paul O'Grady among stars urging people to register to vote

Stars are leading a push to get people to register to vote before it is too late.

TV’s Paul O’Grady and novelist Lee Child are among celebs urging people to sign up before the deadline of midnight on Tuesday.

The Electoral Commission warned up to nine million are yet to register or are registered at the wrong address.

Most are young voters who may be key to deciding the outcome of the December 12 election.

Research found more than 2.4 million private renters are not registered.

Yet campaign group Generation Rent said those tenants had the numbers to swing the result in 96 seats.

O’Grady, star of ITV’s For the Love of Dogs, said: “It’s vital we get out and vote as this is our chance for our voices to be heard and make a difference.”

Child, whose Jack Reacher novels have sold more than 100 million copies, knows the words his hero would use: “Jack Reacher says register and vote – or shut up. That’s how democracy works.

"It’s an awesome power – you can hire or fire the whole government.”

And ex- Labour spin doctor Alastair Campbell said: “A Johnson premiership with a majority will be a disaster for our country. Think carefully. Vote tactically.

"Vote to stop him. But above all register.”
