General Election LIVE: Conservatives win overall majority as they pass threshold of 326 seats

Boris Johnson has led the Conservative Party to an overall majority after winning 326 seats in the general election.

It came as Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson lost her seat and Jeremy Corbyn was forced to announce he was stepping down as Labour leader in a disastrous night for the two parties.

The exit poll, which predicted a major win for the Conservative Party, was borne out in the results early in the night, with Labour scalps across the country as the Tories turned the traditional red heartlands blue with their "get Brexit done" message.

If the result proves correct, the Prime Minister’s party will gain 368 seats with Labour trailing with 191, putting it on course for its worst result in terms of seats since 1935.
