Marc Andreessen took aim at General Catalyst after its latest ad went viral, inviting a backlash and ridicule across a swathe of the venture capital community.
The 55-second clip released on Wednesday features a fictional pitch for “Woof AI,” a robotic pet designed to eliminate the burdens of owning a real dog.
Andreessen, general partner at Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), criticised the ad as “condescending." In another post, he joked: “I ran this through an AI checker, and the checker was insulted.”
Andreessen further mocked the ad, writing: “We’ll either fund your startup, or make a literal TV commercial about how stupid you are.”
And in another sarcastic post, he wrote: “Announcing General Condescension’s newest managing director,” alongside a reaction image.
He also pointed out small details: “One thing they got right is the relative heights.”
Despite the jokes, Andreessen offered a thoughtful take, calling the ad “a clever inversion of the original ‘Mac vs PC’ commercials,” but said it made the sponsor look “smarmy and judgmental.”
Despite the criticism, the ad found supporters who praised it as a bold and creative take on emerging artificial intelligence (AI) trends and venture investing culture.
