Genard Avery took reps at both LB and DE in OTAs

One of the bigger wild cards on the Browns defense is what happens with Genard Avery. The second-year defender offers some versatility, but finding a more defined role for Avery could be a challenge.

Based on the first week of OTAs, it appears the new coaching staff values Avery’s versatility. He took reps at both outside linebacker and defensive end throughout the three sessions.

In college at Memphis, Avery was a stand-up pass rusher almost exclusively. The Browns transitioned him to a more off-ball LB role in his rookie campaign, with mixed results. He bagged 4.5 sacks among his 40 total tackles but struggled to play both the run and pass in space.

At 6-0 and 250 pounds, Avery is too small to be a full-time DE. It will be interesting to see if he continues to get work at DE when the Browns go small/fast up front, with either Myles Garrett or Olivier Vernon kicking inside. His pass rushing ability is something the Browns can definitely use.
