Genard Avery got a sack in his first snap as an Eagle

The move to trade away second-year defensive end Genard Avery was not a popular one. It looks even worse now after seeing what Avery did in his debut for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Avery bagged a sack of Chicago Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky on his very first snap as an Eagle.

Lined up as a stand-up rusher over the bunched slot formation, Avery whipped inside on a stunt and got a heavy paw on Trubisky just before the running back could pick him up in pass protection. He was technically credited with half a sack, splitting the glory with Malcolm Jenkins.

Avery had some looks like this in his rookie campaign in Gregg Williams’ defense in Cleveland. Under new coordinator Steve Wilks, the Browns don’t utilize this sort of pressure package or rush LB. Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz is from the same coaching tree as Williams and saw a better way to use Avery’s particular set of skills.

Be sure to listen to the audio breakdown from Fran Duffy of the Eagles in the tweet:
